Phil Hughes retired 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced, but the three homers he allowed in the first three innings were all the Tigers needed to edge the Yankees. Jason Giambi homered in the second inning, and Robinson Cano made it a one-run game with a three-run shot in the fourth.

Jair Jurrjens left the third start of his career in the second inning with right shoulder tightness, but Bobby Seay, Joel Zumaya and Todd Jones faced the minimum to lift the Tigers, who got an inside-the-park homer from Curtis Granderson in the first.
