Mike Mussina invited whispers about his stability in the Yankees' rotation with two straight blowout losses before Monday's start, and the Tigers only hurt the veteran righty's case. Mussina lasted three innings and surrendered six runs, and the Yankees managed only three hits, all singles.

Justin Verlander tossed his best start since no-hitting the Brewers in June, allowing three singles in seven shutout innings to earn his 14th win. Sean Casey's first triple since 2004 and Brandon Inge's three doubles were four of the Tigers' eight extra-base hits.
