Greg Maddux allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings in his shortest outing of the season as the Padres lost the deciding game in their series against the Dodgers and saw their Wild Card lead shrink by a game. Morgan Ensberg ripped a pinch-hit, two-run homer, and Mike Cameron added a solo shot to account for San Diego's offense.
David Wells gave his old team fits with six strong innings and a pair of hits as the Dodgers closed to within 1 1/2 games of the Padres in the Wild Card race. James Loney wrapped up a torrid series with three hits and four RBIs, giving him a .692 average with two homers and eight RBIs in the set.
