The will to survive
Late rally keys win
Despite a fine outing by starter Nate Robertson, the Tigers had been stifled by Twins starter Matt Garza. But after Ivan Rodriguez drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, Timo Perez hit a two-run single to put the Tigers in front to stay. Perez drove in three runs in the win to help keep the Tigers' playoff hopes alive.

Garza still winless at home
Matt Garza had kept the Tigers at bay for five innings. But the righty gave up three walks in the sixth to lose a one-run lead, and a Timo Perez single drove in two for Detroit as the Twins lost the opener. Justin Morneau provided the offense for Minnesota with a two-run homer in the fourth.
