Chien-Ming Wang hung with Josh Beckett for five innings, but he ran into trouble in the sixth, leaving after two outs and setting the stage for a loss that dropped the Yankees back to 5 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East and 2 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers in the Wild Card. Five pitchers appeared in a four-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach.

Josh Beckett entered Saturday with the same win total and AL Cy Young odds as Chien-Ming Wang, but by the end of the day, his superiority was not in doubt. Backed by three RBIs from sub Jacoby Ellsbury, Beckett held the Yankees to three hits in seven innings for his MLB-best 19th win.
