Tigers stay alive in playoff race

The Royals established a 4-0 lead in the first three innings on Friday, but slowly let the Tigers creep back into the game, and fell to Detroit. A throwing error in the sixth by Jason Smith and a poor fielding choice by John Bale led to the loss. Smith had a two-run homer.

Casey, Inge spark win By Jason Beck / MLB.com
Sean Casey's three-run homer in the fifth and Brandon Inge's two-run single in the sixth helped Detroit defeat KC at Comerica Park and kept the Tigers within striking distance of the AL Wild Card lead. Ivan Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
