The Red Sox became the first team in the Majors to clinch a playoff spot thanks to a three-run ninth-inning rally. Jason Varitek tied things up with a solo homer, and then Julio Lugo launched a two-run tater to cap the comeback.

Carlos Pena belted two long balls, the last of which gave his team a one-run lead. But Al Reyes suffered his fourth blown save when he yielded two ninth-inning homers. Greg Norton added three hits and drove in two runs.
