Verlander wins 18th By Tim Kirby / MLB.com
With their playoff dreams all but dashed, the Tigers did just what they needed to do to keep a flicker of hope alive. Marcus Thames homered twice and Justin Verlander held the Royals down over six innings as the Tigers stayed 5 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the AL Wild Card race.
