Jon Garland had his best stuff in the series opener in St. Petersburg, throwing eight scoreless innings and allowing just four hits, going zero for zero with Tampa Bay starter James Shields. But reliever Justin Speier couldn't hold off the Rays, allowing a leadoff hit in the ninth and then a two-run homer to Evan Longoria.
