The Padres got off to a fast start when Tony Gwynn led off the game with the first home run of his career. But matters didn't improve much as San Diego starter Walter Silva allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 2 1/3 innings. The Padres were held to just four hits with David Eckstein recording two of them.
