New York Yankees Community Info

The New York Yankees are committed to promoting and sustaining a cordial and cooperative relationships with their neighbors; working in conjunction with them to enhance the quality of life throughout the surrounding communities.

The following programs highlight a portion of the outreach initiatives supported by the New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees will participate in two great events with the community on Saturday, June 6th.

At 2:00 p.m., General Manager Brian Cashman and Pitcher Brian Bruney will kick off Summer Reading 2009 at the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building - Ground Floor (5th Avenue and 42nd Street. Kids will be able to sign up for their summer reading lists with the first 150 readers receiving a free pair of tickets to an upcoming Yankees game. There will also be face painting, break dancing demonstrations and games on-site.

The New York Yankees have donated $50,000 for the purchase of 2,500 books for the kids. They also recently donated $75,000 to assist with renovating the Grand Concourse branch to better serve the residents of the Bronx.

Yankees and local youth groups hold dual-stadium ceremony

Holiday Cheer

Thanksgiving Voucher Give-A-Way
On Nov. 25, The New York Yankees, Turner Construction, Tishman Speyer, Tri Line Construction, Plaza Construction and White Rose teamed up and provided 500 Bronx residents with a food voucher, that could be redeemed at a local Met or Pioneer Supermarket to assist with the expense related to preparing a Thanksgiving meal.

Holiday Donations
On an annual basis the New York Yankees donate merchandise, apparel and toys to various community based organizations hosting holiday celebrations. During this holiday season we worked in conjunction with around 40 organizations to deliver holiday cheer.

Holiday Food Drive:
The Yankees host an annual food drive at Yankee Stadium to collect and then distribute food to needy families throughout the Bronx.2008 marked its 15th year.

Highbridge Community Life Center Christmas Day Meal
The New York Yankees covered the expenses associated with hosting a Christmas day meal for local families at the Highbridge Community Life Center.

Supporting Youth Educational/Recreational Outlets

The New York Yankees are committed to supporting community-based organizations that provide positive educational and recreational outlets for New York City youths. Annual contributions of grants, tickets, promotional items, etc. to such programs exceed well over a million dollars. Below is a list of a number of our community partners:

Back to School Events

Back to School Immunization Fair
Prior to the start of this school year, The New York Yankees and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center teamed up to develop a program to assist New York City families with their back to school preparation; The Back to School Immunization Fair. Immunization fairs were hosted at Yankee Stadium and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center and as a result of this program close to 200 children between the ages of 6-13 received the vaccinations required to attend school during the 07/08 school year free of charge. In addition, families who attended the fairs received various give-a-way items and were invited to attend a New York Yankees home game.

MVP Scholarship

The New York Yankees work in conjunction with the administrative staff and teachers of Bronx based high schools to identify graduating seniors who excel in academic and social environments. These students are awarded the New York Yankees Community Council Most Valuable Pupil Scholarship to assist with the cost associated with attending college. To date, close to 300 MVP Scholarships have been awarded.

Sports Management Mentoring Program

New York City youths are invited to attend seminars hosted at Yankee Stadium to introduce them to various careers associated with professional athletics. New York Yankees front office personnel share their day-to-day responsibilities with the individuals in attendance and provide them with an overview of what takes place behind the scenes and how that supports game-day activities.

Morris High School Robotics Program

The New York Yankees are proud sponsors of the Morris High School First Robotics Team. Morris High School's Robotics Team has excelled on the local and national stage, winning competitions and receiving countless awards/honors. In addition, this program provides students with a number of skills that assist them in navigating life's obstacles.

Little League Support Award

To kick off the local little league season on an annual basis the New York Yankees provide Bronx chartered little leagues with a grant to assist with purchasing equipment and covering the cost of fees related to the upcoming season.

New York Yankees High School Blood Donor Championship

The New York Yankees and the New York Blood Center established a partnership to address the issue of the declining blood donor population. As a result, the New York Yankees High School Blood Donor Championship was established. High schools based in the metropolitan area are provided with incentives (tickets, promotional items, etc.) to motivate staff and students 16 years or older to donate blood at their school blood drives. The total number of donations for each school competing in the blood donor championship are tallied at the end of the school year and the top schools are invited to attend a game at Yankee Stadium and are honored in pre-game ceremonies on the field. To date, over 500,000 life saving blood products have been donated to New York and New Jersey hospitals as a result of this program.

Youth Leadership Corp

In an effort to acknowledge young people who are providing a positive service to their community, the New York Yankees work in conjunction with the 12 community boards of the Bronx on an annual basis to identify five area youth in each district that are making a difference. These kids make up The New York Yankees Community Council Leadership Corp and are provided with a stipend to assist them in continuing their work in the community.

Rock & Wrap It Up

The New York Yankees are a strong supporter of the Rock and Wrap it Up food distribution program. After every home game the Yankees work in conjunction with Rock and Wrap it Up and Legends Hospitality to collect all food that is prepared and packaged but not served. All collected items are distributed to local soup kitchens and food pantries to aid in combating hunger. To date, approximately 45,000 meals have been served as a result of this partnership.

Go To Bat for Child Protection

The Montefiore Child Protection Center and the New York Yankees field a great team to fight child abuse. On an annual basis supporters of the Child Protection Center are invited to Yankee Stadium to attend a fundraising event which consists of a pre-game reception, live auction, and viewing the game from various suites and outdoor locations. To date this event has raised over $300,000 to assist the Child Protection Center in their efforts to provide comprehensive services to abused and neglected children throughout the New York Metropolitan area.

New York City Parks and Recreation Playground Associates Program

The New York Yankees cover the cost associated with programming youth related recreational activities in Nelson Playground, Mullaly Skate Park, Mullaly North Playground, and Joyce Kilmer Park during the summer months. Activities offered to neighborhood youth consist of playing board games, sports, arts & crafts, fitness training, etc.
