Dog Day at the Park

Dog Day at the Park - July 15, 2011

The A's sixth annual Dog Day at the Park, which took place on July 15, had close to 700 dogs in attendance, making this the largest Dog Day event in Major League Baseball. A "Pup Rally" was staged in A Lot, with lots of open space for dogs to be able to meet each other; meet A's mascot, Stomper; and grab an A's bandana and goody bag filled with dog products, all courtesy of AvoDerm Natural.

Brodie Brazil of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area was on hand to host the competition, which boasted categories such as "best dressed" small and big dog, the "dog that looked most like its owner", the "best trick", and the overall "best of show" winner.

Amanda McCarthy, wife of A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy, and Brooke Sizemore, wife of A's infielder Scott Sizemore, along with A's in-game host Kara, were the judges of the competition. The best dressed small dog was Minnie, whose yellow and green jeweled leash was a favorite with the judges. Minnie and her owner won an autographed baseball and a free bag of AvoDerm Natural dog food.

The best dressed big dog was Primo, whose big floppy ears made his A's baseball helmet look tiny. Primo won a Dallas Braden autographed baseball and free bag of AvoDerm Natural dog food. The dog that looked most like his owner was Tonga. Both Tonga and his owner sported a head and goatee full of gray hair. Tonga won an Andrew Bailey autographed baseball and a free bag of AvoDerm Natural dog food.

The winner of the best trick was Russo, who sang along and wailed to his singing owner. Russo's songs prompted all of the dogs in the audience to begin singing along. Russo won a baseball signed by Trevor Cahill and a free bag of AvoDerm Natural dog food.

Minnie - Best Dressed Small Dog

Minnie, winner of the best dressed small dog award, was dolled up with green and yellow pom poms on her paws and a green top and green tutu. She won the overall award of "best in show" and received a year's supply of free dog food, courtesy of AvoDerm Natural as well as an authentic gold A's jersey.

Immediately following the "Pup Rally" and dog contest, A's fans and their canines walked around the warning track of the field during the "Pup Parade." A portion of the proceeds from A's Dog Day at the Park was donated to Dogs4Diabetes, a non-profit organization that trains medical-alert service dogs to detect hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) in humans and alert their partner or other family member of the situation.
