MUG Root Beer Float Day 2004
Presented by Pepsi
A's Raised $50,000 at MUG Root Beer Float Day
Proceeds Benefit The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics raised $50,000 at the Fifth Annual A's MUG Root Beer Float Day with all proceeds benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The $50,000 is the most money raised in the five-year history of this event. Last year's A's MUG Root Beer Float Day raised close to $40,000.

Former and current A's players, coaches and wives along with celebrities from local sports teams and radio and television personalities served root beer floats in the East Side Club today from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The root beer floats were priced at $2 each and additional money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was raised through tips given in exchange for autographs and pictures with the celebrity servers.

Additional proceeds were raised through the sale of A's autographed baseballs and mugs, a silent auction of sports memorabilia and an on-line auction titled "Be a Celebrity Scooper."

"A's MUG Root Beer Float Day is one of the most unique community outreach events in sports. A simple idea that was born five years ago, this event has grown each and every year. The real winners today are the children who will benefit from the funds donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation," said A's President Michael Crowley. "The Oakland A's would like to thank everybody who made this year's MUG Root Beer Float Day an enormous success."

A's MUG Root Beer Float Day was sponsored by Pepsi and Comcast. The ice cream for the event was donated by Berkeley Farms.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Founded in 1978, the Greater Bay Area Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is one of the largest fundraising Chapters in the nation, contributing more than $5 million to diabetes research annually. With over 10,000 Bay Area supporters, the Greater Bay Area Chapter provides a significant amount of funding to support local research grants at Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco.
