CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood and his wife, Sarah, are proud to announce the creation of the Wood Family Foundation. The Wood Family Foundation will benefit many children's charities throughout the Chicagoland area.

"I believe it is important to make a difference in a child's life," Kerry said. "Sarah and I have committed ourselves to Chicago, and I would like to use my success on and off the field to help grow a foundation that will make a difference in a child's life."

Kerry will serve as founder and president of the foundation, and Sarah will serve as co-founder and executive director.

"We have been fortunate to help so many children over the years," Sarah said. "The creation of the new Wood Family Foundation will give us a chance to help many more children for years to come. Even though Kerry's full-time job is on the mound, Kerry's mind and heart are dedicated to making this foundation last for generations."

Since 2001, Kerry has centered his philanthropic efforts on children. Kerry's past philanthropic work includes the Kerry Wood Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament -- which has raised more than $2 million for Children's Memorial Hospital -- and Project 3000, Derrek Lee's charity.

"I am proud of the work I have done in the past, but when I see how dedicated former Chicago athletes are or were to philanthropies -- like Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Bob Love, Walter Payton and Gale Sayers -- those people inspire me to do more and help more," Kerry said.

The first official Wood Family Foundation event will be the sixth-annual Kerry Wood Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament on Sept. 18 at 10pin Bowling Lounge and Hotel Sax located at 330 N. State St. in Chicago. The event will be hosted by Eric and Kathy of 101.9fm The MIX. The tournament will feature Kerry's teammates from the Cubs and other local celebrities.
