Bowling Tournament gets a big win for the WFF
More than $300K raised to aid initiatives for Chicago's kids
CHICAGO -- He may have retired from baseball, but former Cubs pitcher and Chicago favorite Kerry Wood has been keeping himself busy these days. As founder of the Wood Family Foundation, he and wife Sarah (co-founder and executive director), have made giving back a priority in their household. On Wednesday, June 27, the Woods hosted Kerry Wood's Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament, which raised more than $300,000 for the Wood Family Foundation and provided funding for their key program initiatives to help Chicago's kids.
More than 300 people came out, including Cubs players, celebrities, media personalities and supporters, for an evening of bowling, bidding, food, cocktails and fun at 10pin Bowling Lounge and Hotel Sax in downtown Chicago. The event, emceed by Windy City LIVE's Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini, featured corporate-sponsored teams on lanes with assigned Cubs players as celebrity captains including owner Tom Ricketts and President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein. Media personalities who served as guest bartenders included Sarah Kustok of Comcast Sports, Ryan Baker from CBS and Billy Dec from Windy City LIVE. Other celebrities in attendance included actor John Mahoney, actor John Cusack, former SNL comedian Finesse Mitchell, WWE superstar CM Punk, Plain White T's Tom Higgenson and Dave Tirio, the Chicago Bears' Desmond Clark, former hockey player Chris Chelios, former Bears player Steve McMichael, and many more.
This year's highlight was the live and silent auctions, which offered up one-of-a-kind experiences such as "Fishing with Kerry" and "Watching a Cubs game in the President's Suite with Theo and Kerry." However, it was the Cubs themed golf cart with autographs from the Chicago Cubs that kicked off the bidding and ended in a sale for $9,500.
Partygoers also showed their support for the upcoming Wood Family Foundation School Supply Drives by "Bidding for Kids" and raising money to provide more than 8,500 students in need with supply kits for the entire school year. The Wood Family Foundation team will distribute the kits at two back-to-school events taking place on Saturday, July 28, in Humboldt Park and Friday, August 3, in Englewood.
"Sarah and I are thrilled at the support we received for this year's Strike Zone event. We are grateful for everyone who came out to have a good time and who joined us online by bidding on our many auction items," said Kerry.
