Since 2001, the Padres annually honor exceptional San Diego County school teachers at Petco Park. The club provides special discounts to the region's primary and secondary teachers, pays tribute to the San Diego County District Teachers of the Year and the reigning County Teachers of the Year. A number of complimentary ballpark tours are hosted for San Diego Unified School District's "Catch A Rising Star" program, recognizing students attending low performing schools who have made significant academic, attendance, and behavioral progress during the previous school year. As an extension of the club's $8.3 million investment in a state-of-the-art baseball facility in the Dominican Republic, the Padres have established a visible presence in improving the schools and educational opportunities for children in the nearby town of Najayo, with other academic and health initiatives being planned for implementation.
