Thanksmas was first brought to the Tampa Bay community in 2006 when former Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon wanted to help raise awareness for the homeless situation in Tampa Bay. Maddon cooked up the idea to create an event that brought attention to the growing number of homeless individuals in Tampa Bay by serving his family's traditional holiday favorites in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, a critical time for those in need.
Over the last eight Thankmas events, Rays coaches, staff, and other volunteers have served approximately 7,000 individuals in need and provided many with clothing, shoes, scarves and other necessities. Fundraising efforts from this event have also resulted in thousands of dollars in donations to the shelters.
