About Thanksmas: Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon first introduced his annual Thanksmas program in 2006 with the purpose of bringing awareness to the homeless situation in Tampa Bay. Maddon cooked up the idea to create an event that brought attention to the growing number of homeless individuals in Tampa Bay by serving his family's traditional holiday favorites in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, a critical time for those in need.
Maddon took recipes from his Italian and Polish roots and combined them to create the Thanksmas meal. He rallied fellow coaches and staff members at Tropicana Field to prepare meals for thousands at bay area homeless shelters. Over the last eight Thankmas events, Maddon has served approximately 7,000 individuals in need and provided many with clothing, shoes, scarves and other necessities. His fundraising efforts have also resulted in thousands of dollars in donations to the shelters.
