José Castro joined the Braves in October 2014 and is in his third season with the club...He assists hitting coach Kevin Seitzer in every aspect of the Braves' hitting program.

Castro, 58, spent the 2014 season as the quality assurance coach for the Chicago Cubs and has more than 26 years' experience as a minor-league hitting coordinator or hitting coach in the Montreal, Florida, San Diego and Seattle organizations.

Served as Seattle's interim hitting coach in 2008.

A former infielder, Castro was a 27th-round pick of Philadelphia in the 1977 June draft.

He posted a .275 batting average during his 14-year minor league career, which saw him ascend as high as Triple-A in stints with the Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Montreal Expos. 

Castro retired as a player and began his coaching career in 1990 with Montreal, handling hitting coach duties at Single-A Jamestown. 

From 1992 to 2001, he was a minor league hitting coach in the Florida Marlins system, before returning to Montreal in 2002 and 2003.

He worked as a minor league hitting coach in the San Diego Padres system for five seasons, from 2003 to 2007, including three seasons (2005-07) at Triple-A Portland. 

Castro began the 2008 season as the Mariners' minor league hitting coordinator before he was promoted to Major League hitting coach on June 19, following manager John McLaren's firing 
Castro returned to his minor league hitting coordinator duties for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

He graduated from Jackson Senior High School in Miami, Fla., in 1977. 

He and his wife Lisa have two children, Rachel and Matthew, and reside in Miami
