Don Kelly was named the Astros first base coach on Nov. 21, 2018. He joins his first Major League coaching staff after a two-year run (2017-18) as a professional scout for the Tigers. His scouting career immediately followed a 16-year playing career, which included parts of nine Major League seasons with the Pirates (2007), Tigers (2009-14) and Marlins (2015-16). Originally an eighth-round pick of the Tigers in the 2001 draft, Kelly didn't make his MLB debut until 2007, appearing in 25 games for the Pirates as a 27-year-old utility player. He established himself as a Major Leaguer in 2009 and appeared in the Majors for eight consecutive season from 2009-16. Twice he was named the Heart and Hustle Award recipient for the Tigers (2013, 2014). Kelly hails from Butler, Penn., and starred at Point Park College in Pennsylvania. He spends his offseason in Mars, Penn., with his wife, Carrie, and their three sons, Brett, Luke and Brooks.
