Coaching Career

Begins his first season as the Yankees' hitting coach after being named to the post on 1/12/15...Is his 17th season as a Major League hitting coach, having previously served in that role for the Marlins (1996), Cubs (1997-2002), Royals (2003-05), Mariners (2006-08) and Dodgers (2008-11)...Has previously coached alongside other members of the Yankees' current staff, including Tony Pena with the Royals and Larry Rothschild with the Cubs…Manager Joe Girardi was the Cubs' catcher under Pentland from 2000-02...During the 2014 season, held the position of hitting coordinator in Miami's player development system...In 2012, was the hitting coach for Seattle's Triple-A club in Tacoma…Was a minor league hitting coordinator for the Mets before joining the Cubs in 1997...Was a scout for the Marlins from 1992-93 before becoing a minor league hitting coach for them from 1993-96.

Playing Career

Spent three seasons in the Padres' minor league system (1969-71) as a left-handed batter, playing first base, outfield, catcher and pitcher...As a batter, hit .267 (277-for-1,037) with 16 HR and 146 RBI in 352 games...As a pitcher, went 0-1 with a 3.82 ERA (73.0 IP, 31 ER) and 44 K in 29 appearances (one start)...Played under Don Zimmer at Salt Lake City in 1970.


Is married to Elizabeth and has two children, Katie and Josh...Attended Arizona State University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees…was a member of the school's 1967 NCAA championship team and was later inducted into the University's Hall of Fame in October 2002...Prior to coaching at the professional level, was an assistant coach at Mesa Community College (Ariz.) in 1972 and the JV Coach at Arizona State University in 1973…was an assistant coach at the University of California, Riverside from 1975-82 and Arizona State University from 1983-91, winning national championships with UC Riverside in 1977 and '82…was also the assistant athletic director for Wichita State University during the 1973-74 academic year.
