Coaching Career

Begins his 15th season as a Major League hitting coach and fourth with the Dodgers after serving as the club's hitting instructor from 2008-10...served as the hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners from 2005-08...prior to his tenure with the Mariners, was the hitting coach for Kansas City (2002-05) and the Chicago Cubs (1997-2002)... before becoming a Major League coach he served as the minor league hitting coordinator for the New York Mets at the beginning of the 1997 season and from 1992-96 he served the Florida Marlins in different capacities as he was a scout (1992-93) and minor league hitting coach (1993-96)...began his assistant coaching career in the college ranks at Mesa Community College (AZ), Arizona State University and UC-Riverside, winning two National Championships with the Highlanders...also served as the assistant athletic director for Wichita State University...while a college coach, worked with future big leaguers Barry Bonds, Ken Landreaux, Fernando Viña and Mike Devereaux.

Playing Career

As a player he spent three seasons in the San Diego Padres' minor league system (1969-71) playing first base, outfield, pitcher and catcher...played under Don Zimmer at Salt Lake City (AAA) in 1970, batting .302 in 98 games and appearing in 20 games as a reliever...despite being left-handed, Pentland was used as a catcher in 15 games for Lodi (A) in 1971.

Personal

Jeffrey William Pentland and his wife Elizabeth reside in Mesa, AZ...has two children, daughter Katie and son Josh...has both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Arizona State University where he was a member of the Sun Devils' 1967 National Championship team...inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame in October 2002.
