Coaching Career

Named the Mets hitting coach on December 9, 2018...Was the Cubs' hitting coach during the 2018 season...Chicago's offense produced an NL-best .258 batting average and ranked second with a .333 OBP...Coached the Red Sox hitters from 2015-2017, during which time Boston led the majors in runs scored (2,411), tied for the major league lead with a .334 on-base percentage, had the second-best batting average (.268) and ranked third in OPS (.762)...Was Oakland's hitting coach from 2012-2014...In his first year as Oakland's hitting coach in 2012, the A's increased both their total number of runs scored (+68) and home runs (+81) from the previous year...Was the hitting coach for the Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA) in 2011... Played 19 major league seasons with the Giants (1981-87), Angels (1988-90, 1993-96), Twins (1991-92), Royals (1997) and Yankees (1988-99)...San Francisco originally drafted him in the 11th round of the 1977 June Amateur Draft...Made his major league debut on April 10, 1981, and was the first Jamaican-born player to reach the majors...The switch-hitting outfielder reached the postseason four times and won three World Series championships with the Twins in 1991 and the Yankees in 1998-99...Compiled a .274 average (2,380-8,673) with 424 doubles, 30 triples, 350 homers, 1,372 RBI and a .360 on-base percentage in 2,436 games.
