Coaching Career
Begins his fifth season as Yankees first base coach in 2013, and 15th year in the Yankees organization...also serves as the team's infield instructor...the Yankees lead the AL with a .986 fielding percentage since 2009 when he joined the staff...in 2012, the Yankees made just 75 errors, the third-lowest total in the Majors...In 2010, the Yankees led the Majors with a .988 fielding percentage and committed only 69 errors, setting franchise records for highest fielding percentage and fewest errors for a season...also featured three Gold Glove Award winners (Cano, Jeter, Teixeira), marking the first time three Yankees inelders won the honor in the same season...the club set an all-time Major League record with 18 consecutive errorless games in 2009...Is his third tenure on a Major League coaching staff, having served three years as Detroit's rst base coach (2003-05) and Pittsburgh's first base coach and infield instructor in 1986...Spent three years as the Yankees' roving infield instructor (2006-08)...is in his second stint with the Yankees organization, having spent seven seasons (1996-2002) as the
Yankees' roving defensive coordinator and one year (1998) as a Major League scout...Began his coaching career with the San Diego Padres as a roving minor league instructor from 1984-85...joined the Chicago Cubs as a roving minor league infield instructor from 1987-92, taking over as manager of the organization's Triple-A Iowa club in May 1991 for the remainder of the season...also spent two seasons (1994-95) as the roving minor league infield instructor with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Playing Career
Played 15 seasons of professional baseball, including 11 at the Major League level with the St. Louis Cardinals (1972-73, '75), Houston Astros (1974), Chicago Cubs (1976-80), Detroit Tigers (1981-82) and California Angels (1982)... finished his career with a .974 Major League fielding percentage, appearing in games at second base, third base and shortstop... since retiring in 1982, no position player has accrued as many career plate appearances without a homer...Was selected by St. Louis in the third round of the 1969 First-Year Player Draft...Paced league shortstops in fielding during four of his minor league seasons and won two Rawlings Silver Glove Awards (1972, '75) as the minors' best fielding shortstop... established an American Association record for shortstops with a .979 fielding percentage in 1972...Received his bachelor of science degree in political science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash... was an NCAA Division II All-American in 1969 and
named to the NCAA Division II All-Tournament Team the same season... was also Division II All-Coast in 1968 and '69.
Personal
He and his wife, Renee, have one daughter, Brittney, and two grandchildren... Renee is an accomplished painter and is represented at galleries throughout California... is an aficionado of the wine industry and grows his own grapes and olives... in offseason, works as a ranch hand tending to llamas and cows... also plays in senior tennis league.
