Biography:
Full name is Bob Kelly Abreu...Known as "El Comedulce" in Venezuela which translates roughly to "the candy-eater," which had been his father Nelson Abreu's nickname...Following Nelson's death, Bobby "began asking people to call him the same name as a way of honoring his father's memory."...Signed by Astros at age of 16 as a non-drafted free agent on 8/21/90...Third overall pick by Tampa Bay in Expansion Draft, 11/18 /97; then traded to Phillies for Kevin Stocker on same day...Had three brothers in pro baseball: Dennis played in Cubs' minor league system; Nielsen played in Phillies' minor league system; Nelson played for Camden of Independent Atlantic League...Along with Mariano Rivera, delivered Christmas gifts to the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx in Dec. 2007... While with Phillies, often purchased $10,000 in tickets for children to Friday evening games in his "Abreu's Amigos" program in 2003 and 2004...Expanded program in 2005, allowing for larger groups to attend games...Children in program received jerseys, coupons for concessions and chance to meet Bobby on field during batting practice...2004 winner of Phillies Community Service Award and was Phillies' nominee for Major League Baseball's Roberto Clemente Award...In 2001, served as the Honorary Chairman for the American Red Cross Blood Drive...Signed by Astros' scout Andres Reiner.
