The Jays Care Foundation has partnered with Toronto Community Housing to form Rookie League Baseball; an eight-week baseball day camp program for kids who live in Toronto Community Housing. Expanded to over 20 teams, Rookie League now has over 500 kids participating each summer where they learn about healthy lifestyles and baseball! Through the support of Honourary Commissioner Vernon Wells, each participant receives a new glove, T-shirt and lunch throughout the camp. In 2006, Vernon made a number of visits to league games and hosted an end-of-season All-Star game and party on field at Rogers Centre.
2007 SEASON ROOKIE LEAGUE WRAPUP

On August 21, more than 200 children, from 22 Toronto Community Housing units across the city, were on the diamond for a series of baseball clinics put on by Blue Jays volunteers along with the professional expertise of Vernon Wells, Honorary Commissioner of the Rookie League and Jesse Litch. The kids were treated to a PIZZA PIZZA lunch and got to ask Vernon and Jesse a slew of questions during an interactive Q&A session. Vernon and Charlene Wells also donated back-to-school back-packs and supplies to all of the children in attendance. Reshaun Henry and David Oheme threw out the first pitch at that night's game and all the kids sat in the stands to see the pros at work!
