DURHAM, NC -- USA Baseball has announced the selection of David Webb and Carl Nichols as members of its 2008 14U National Team coaching staff. Webb will serve as the team's head coach, and Nichols will act as one of the squad's assistant coaches.

"Dave has been an integral part of the 14U program since its inception," said Rick Riccobono, USA Baseball 14U National Team Program Director.

"His hard work and dedication to USA Baseball and its mission over the last nine years make him an excellent choice to be the 2008 14U National Team Head Coach."

Riccobono echoed his sentiments of Webb in discussing the addition of Nichols.

"Carl brings outstanding experience from the highest levels of the game to our staff," Riccobono said.

"He is an excellent teacher who excels at individual instruction as well as team concepts. We are very pleased to have named him to this year's staff and look forward to including him in our program for the foreseeable future."

Webb is the head coach at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, AZ. He served as an assistant coach in 2007 for the 14U National Team at both the Regional Qualifying and Pan Am Championship Events. Coach Webb has worked with the USA Baseball 16U Championships (formerly known as the "Junior Olympics") each of the past nine summers, including the last five as site supervisor. Last year he also took on the duties of testing director for the event.

A third baseman, Webb played college baseball at Scottsdale Community College for two years (92-93) and then transferred to Grand Canyon University for two more (94-95). In 1996, he stayed on at Grand Canyon as a Graduate Assistant Coach.

Nichols was a member of the USA Baseball 14U National Team Trials Staff in Orlando in November of 2007. He also served on the Task Force for the USA Baseball Champions Program (14U) last year as well.

Nichols was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 4th round of the 1980 Amateur draft. In 1989 Nichols was traded to the Houston Astros, where he remained until his final season in 1991. Nichols currently works for the MLB Urban Youth Academy, a baseball/softball instructional facility located in Compton, CA.
