14U National Team begins trials in Orlando, FL
Red edges Blue, 9-8, in the first of three trials games in Orlando, FL

(ORLANDO, Florida) -- The USA Baseball 2007 14U National Team began its Team Trials today at the Payne Stewart Athletic Complex at The First Academy in Orlando, FL. There will be three controlled scrimmages held between the Red and Blue Trials squads that will be used to select the final 14U National Team. Team USA will be one of ten countries competing in the COPABE "A" Pan Am Games in Salinas, Puerto Rico next week. Team USA qualified for the event by taking home the gold medal at the Regional Qualifier in January of this year. The Pan Am's will run from November 23 - December 3, 2007 and will be the first year of competition for the United States.
Game play started smoothly after both pitchers worked swiftly through the first. It was the Red team that opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the second inning. Jake Gober walked to leadoff the inning followed by RBI singles from Rio Ruiz (Covina, CA) and Dean Lockwood (Royal Palm Beach, FL). The Red Team added another run to make it 4-0 after two innings.
The Blue team would bounce back in the third to draw within a run at 4-3 before Lockwood lit up the scoreboard once more with a two run single to right. Colin Reed (Belmont, CA) followed it up with a two run blast deep over the right field wall. After the third inning the score was 6-4 Red Team.
The Blue Team got back on the board in the fourth inning scoring four runs on several base hits and defensive mishaps by the Red Team, which brought the score to 8-6 Blue Team. The Red Team scored three more runs off of Rafael Garcia (Gilroy, CA) after 2 hit batsmen in two innings of work making the score 9-8 Red Team.
Both teams settled down in the sixth and seven innings letting the pitching taking over. Andre Martinez (Pembroke Pines, FL) for the Blue Team allowed two runners to reach before striking out the side in the seventh inning, all looking at called third strikes. Joe Armstrong (Union City, CA) pitched a scoreless top half of the eighth inning for the Red Team, bringing the game to the bottom of the eighth with the advantage still going to the Red Team 9-8. Martinez (Pembroke Pines, FL) pitched another scoreless inning bring his total to three scoreless innings and ending the game with a final score of 9-8 Red Team.
Game two of the 14U National Team Trials will take place Monday, November 19, 2007 at 7:00pm at the Payne Stewart Athletic Complex at The First Academy.
