Ruiz blasts Red past blue in Game 2 of 14U National Team trials
Red Team comes back to beat the Blue Team 4-3; Pitching dominates Game 2
Nov. 19, 2007
(ORLANDO, Florida) - Monday evening marked the second of three games between the 14U National Team Trials Red and Blue squads in preparation for the COPABE "A" Pan Am Championships. After a 9-8 game last night and an afternoon practice session, Head Coach Tom Succow (Glendale, AZ) was looking for more from his pitchers, "I want more consistency out of our pitching," noted Succow. Both teams responded with strong performances on the mound.
Blue Team starting pitcher Matthew Crownover (Ringgold, GA) set the tone for the pitchers in the first inning when he came back to retire the side after hitting Dante Flores (Los Angles, CA). Crownover's night concluded after three innings with a line that featured five strikeouts including him striking out the side in the second inning.
The Blue Team's bats followed Crownover's lead when they came-up in the bottom-half of the first inning. With one out, Mitchell Kranson (Danville, CA) and Zach Davies (Gilbert, AZ) hit back to back singles before Alex Real (Phoenix, AZ) knocked them in with an RBI double to the gap in right-centerfield. Colin Reed (Belmont, CA) pitching for the Red Team then settled in over the next two innings and gave up no more runs.
The middle innings featured the same precision pitching and sound defense. Tyler Davis (Mountain View, CA) came into the game in relief for the Blue Team throwing two scoreless innings striking out two and walking one batter. Matt Taylor (Corona, CA) made an appearance for the Red Team with two innings of relief work allowing one run on one hit while striking out one.
Going into the sixth inning the Blue Team pitching staff had a no-hitter going until McCabe Reiten (Spanaway, WA) hit a single in the top of the inning. Rio Ruiz (Covina, CA) then came up with Reiten on first and belted a line drive homerun into the trees in left-centerfield. The offense continued in the top of the seventh inning for the Red Team when Dante Flores (Los Angeles, CA) and Jake Gober (Sammamish, WA) both reached on singles. Ron Miller (Los Angeles, CA) then drove them in with a two RBI single.
The Red Team never looked back as McCabe Reiten (Spanaway, WA) got the save pitching a scoreless eighth inning and giving the Red Team a 4-3 victory in the second of three games of the USA Baseball 14U National Team Trials. Game three is slated for Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 7:00pm and will be the last contest before the coaching staff selects the final roster for international competition.
