(COAMO, Puerto Rico) - The 14U National Team put another "W" in the win column Tuesday defeating Guatemala by a score of 9-2. Next in pool play the U.S. will face Brazil (2-0) on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. (AST)

The U.S. started quickly in the first - after a leadoff walk to Zach Davies (Gilbert, AZ), Rio Ruiz (Covina, CA) hit a long fly ball that carried over the left field fence for a 2-run homerun.

After getting himself into a jam in the top of the second, Rafael Garcia (Gilroy, CA) managed to strike out the side and leave Guatemalan base runners on second and third. The second inning brought more runs for the U.S. Cabe Reiten (Spanaway, WA) was hit by a pitch, stole second and then later advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt by the Guatemalans. Davies then came up with two outs and singled him home. After Ruiz walked advancing Davies to second, Andre Real (Orange, CA) hit a towering fly ball to left field that was misplayed by the left fielder which allowed both Davies and Ruiz to score. All three runs were plated with two outs. At the end of two innings of play, Team USA was on top 5-0.

Both Team USA and Guatemala had base runners in the third inning but were unable to score. The fourth inning brought some defensive changes for the U.S. as Austin Davidson (Oxnard, CA) came in to play third base and Dante Flores (Los Angeles, CA) relieved Garcia after three innings of scoreless work, allowing only two hits and striking out five.

Team USA started off strong in the bottom of the fourth inning as Davies reached on a walk followed by singles by Ruiz and Davidson. With the bases loaded, Cole Gleason (Mesa, AZ) plated a run but grounded into a double play then Tyler Kiefer (San Jose, CA) flied out to right field to end what looked liked to be a promising inning. Andre Martinez (Pembroke Pines, FL) pitched a scoreless fifth inning for the U.S., striking out the side and walking two batters. Galen Doucet (Gulfport, MS) added another run in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a line drive solo homerun into left centerfield. Heading into the sixth inning the score was USA 7-0 over Guatemala. In the bottom of the sixth inning Team USA added two more runs on a Kiefer sacrifice fly and a single by Andre Martinez.

Guatemala rallied in the seventh inning scoring two runs on two hits, a walk and a wild pitch, but that was all it could muster. The final score was 9-2 in favor of Team USA.

Although Team USA got the victory Assistant Coach Dave Webb (Gilbert, AZ) was not entirely pleased with the effort.

"We played well enough to win," Webb said.

STAR WATCH: Over the first three games of the tournament Zach Davies (Gilbert, AZ) is 7-10 with 4 RBI's and has scored 5 runs.
