U.S. capitalizes on five Brazil errors; pushes ahead in big fifth inning

Nov. 28, 2007

(COAMO, Puerto Rico) - Another slow start for the 14U National Team lead to an early Brazil advantage, but thanks to a late rally and sloppy Brazilian defense, Team USA battled back to win 9-1. Thursday pits Team USA (4-0) against Aruba (2-2) in a 3:00 p.m. (AST) match-up.

Dean Lockwood (Royal Palm Beach, FL) started the game for the 14U National Team and it wasn't until the third inning before the Brazilians got on the board. After a leadoff single by Lourengo (BRA), Lockwood struck out the next batter but then surrendered another single to Matsuda (BRA) that moved Lourengo to third. The Brazilians then executed a perfect squeeze play that plated Lourengo giving the Brazil an early 1-0 lead.

Team USA did not take long to strike back, taking advantage of a Zach Davies (Gilbert, AZ) infield single which he advanced to second on following an arrant throw. Later in the inning Davies stole third and scored on another overthrow by Brazil's catcher tying the game at 1-1. The 14U National Team got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after Alex Real (Phoenix, AZ) singled to right then advanced to second after the right fielder misplayed the ball. Rio Ruiz (Covina, CA) then moved Alex Real over to third on a groundball to first. Jake Gober (Sammamish, WA) then tripled him home to plate Team USA's second run of the game. The inning ended as Austin Davidson (Oxnard, CA) was robbed of an extra base hit by Brazil's first baseman.

Lockwood came back out to pitch in the fifth inning and struck out two more Brazilian batters to bring his total to six for the day. Davies then added to his already impressive tournament by hitting a solo homerun to left center field. The inning continued with a single by Reinaldo Almora (Hialeah, FL) and Alex Real getting hit by a pitch. Andre Real (Orange, CA) then blasted a three-run homerun to left field to increase the lead for Team USA to 6-1.

Andre Martinez (Pembroke Pines, FL) came in to relieve Lockwood in the sixth inning walking the leadoff batter but then striking out the next three batters with a steady diet of breaking balls, leaving a runner stranded for Brazil. Gober then led off the bottom half of the sixth with a base hit. Dante Flores (Los Angeles, CA) pinch hit for Martinez and walked, followed by another single by Zach Davies. This loaded the bases for Team USA and Almora quickly added two runs with an infield single scoring Gober, then Flores after another error by Brazil. A wild pitch plated Davies and advanced Almora to third but Alex Real struck out swinging to end the inning and strand Almora at third. Zach Davies then contributed on the mound setting the Brazilian's down in one, two, three order to end the game giving Team USA the 9-1 victory and moving its pool play record to 4-0.
