14U National Team dominates Dominican Republic

Lockwood leads the way for Team USA going 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs

(COAMO, Puerto Rico) – Team USA defeated the Dominican Republic 18-1 Friday night, illustrating why they earned the number one seed in this year’s COPABE “A” Pan Am Championships in Coamo, Puerto Rico. The 14U National Team put up 18 runs on 19 hits while holding the Dominican Republic to one run on three hits.

With one swing of the bat, the 14U National Team had a lead against the Dominican Republic Friday night. Zach Davies (Gilbert, AZ) led off the game with a solo homerun to left field, his third of the tournament. The Team USA offensive output continued with back-to-back singles by Dean Lockwood (Royal Palm Beach, FL) and Reinaldo Almora (Hialeah, FL) and with one out Andre Real (Orange, CA) reached on an error, loading the bases for Jake Gober (Sammamish, WA). Gober followed with a two-RBI single to right field scoring Lockwood and Almora. Andre Real later scored the last run of the first for Team USA on a sacrifice fly to right field by Jarred Mederos (Hialeah, FL). Team USA sent all nine players to the plate in the first inning scoring four runs on four hits and taking advantage of two Dominican Republic errors.

Davies started the second inning off with another extra base hit, lining a double down the left field line. Lockwood then scored Davies on a double of his own and later scored on a passed ball. The U.S. would only score two runs in the second inning, stranding two base runners heading to the bottom of the second with a 6-0 lead.

Andre Martinez (Pembroke Pines, FL) started the game pitching two innings of no hit baseball striking out five. In his two innings of work there was one unearned run as the Dominican Republic scored a run on a dropped fly ball in left field. MaCabe Reiten (Spanaway, WA) relieved Martinez in the third inning and recorded three innings of work surrendering only two hits and no runs.

Almora ended the Dominican Republic’s third inning with a spectacular diving catch in center field and followed it with a lead off homerun in the top of the fourth, increasing the lead to 7-1. Andre Real then singled and stole second but was stranded at second to end the inning, bringing the Team USA total to six runners left on base through four innings. The fifth inning saw the 14U National Team plate three more runs making the score 10-1. Mederos led off with a walk then Reiten was hit by a pitch. Davies then scored both of them with a double to right center field. Dean Lockwood recorded his third hit and second RBI of the day by singling in Davies from second. The 14U National Team added eight more runs in the top half of the seventh inning highlighted by a three-run homerun by Cole Gleason (Mesa, AZ) and a solo homerun by Rafael Garcia (Gilroy, CA), back-to-back.

Although the 14U National Team has already secured the number one seed in the medal rounds, Head Coach Tom Succow (Phoenix, AZ) was still focused.

“The team needs to continue to get better each day. Just because you may have beaten an opponent earlier in the tournament does not mean they are going to give in to us the second time around.”
