September 1, 2007

IXTAPA, Mexico - Rain that continued throughout much of the day proved to be the only winner as the USA Baseball Junior National Team's scheduled bronze-medal contest with Canada Sept. 1 was postponed at the COPABE "AAA" Pan American Junior Championships.

The USA-Canada game has been rescheduled for Sept. 2, which will be the final day that the contest could be played. Both the USA (3-2) and Canada (3-2) have travel plans to return to their respective countries on Sept. 3. Tournament officials have not determined a game time or location for the contest pending the weather and playing conditions for Unidad Deportiva and La Hacienda stadiums. These two stadiums have been the sites for games during the event, which began on Aug. 24.

Pan Am officials have indicated that the gold-medal contest between Cuba (5-0) and host Mexico (5-0) will have priority in being played should action resume on Sept. 2. If playing conditions and time allow, the USA-Canada contest will be completed also.

The Pan Ams, which features athletes ages 18 and under, serves as a qualifier for next year's International BAseball Federation "AAA" World Championships.

Based on team finishes in the 11-country event, Team USA, Canada, Cuba and Mexico have earned berths in the 2008 World Championships. Canada will serve as host for the tournament, which is slated to be played in Edmonton, Alberta.
