  • LYNN, Mass. -- A five-run first inning foiled the 2008 USA Baseball National Trials Team's efforts Saturday night in a 6-3 loss to the North Shore Navigators of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. It was the firstloss the U.S. team suffered in three games.

The Navigators managed only one hit the rest of the game, which was John Hill's leadoff single in the third. Derek Trent walked to leadoff the sixth inning, moved to second on a passed ball and later scored on a two-out error.

The National Trials Team let a golden opportunity pass in the eighth after loading the bases with one out on three singles. However, only one run scoredl, and that by way of a wild pitch.

Starter Kyle Gibson (Missouri; Greenfield, Ind.) suffered the loss; he allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Gibson retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced, striking out five of the last six.
