Roger, Roger, Americans Smoak North Adams 9-1

  • NORTH ADAMS, MA Justin Smoak (South Carolina) and Roger Kieschnick (Texas Tech) hit back-to-back home runs to finish off a five-run fifth inning to lead Team USA (2-0) to a 9-1 victory over North Adams (MA) on Wednesday evening.

    Ryan Flaherty (Vanderbilt) had two RBI doubles, while Jeremy Hamilton (Wright State) had three hits and two steals, playing against his former team, while being the designated hitter for the Americans.

    Team USA chased starter Nick McCully from the game in the fifth, scoring four times off of McCully to lead 6-1. Smoak's two-run home run was McCully's final pitch, as an RBI double by Flaherty followed by a steal of third and ensuing error made it 4-1. After Smoak's homer, Kieschnick followed with a solo home run to make it 7-1

    Team USA took the lead in the second with two runs, as a Landon Hernandez (Hawaii) run-scoring double followed a Forsythe RBI single in the fourth to make it 2-1.

    Mike Minor (Vanderbilt) (1-0) went the first 3.0 pre-determined innings for the win, striking out three and giving up a hit and unearned run. Josh Romanski (San Diego) struck out five in his three innings of scoreless ball. He scattered run four hits and did not walk a batter. Victor Black (Dallas Baptist) struck out five of the eight batters he faced over two innings as the U.S. struck out 15.

    North Adams took a 1-0 lead in the first scoring an unearned run on a throwing error by Hernandez at catcher on a double steal attempt.

    TEAM NOTES
    Smoak's homer was the first homer for Team USA this summer, while Kieschnick then followed with a solo home run as it was the first back-to-back home runs of the summer.... Arizona State's Brett Wallace and Petey Paramore are slated to join the team by the end of the week after playing in Omaha and being eliminated by UC Irvine last night... Long Beach State shortstop Danny Espinosa made two highlight-reel plays , deep on the left side to rob the Steeplecats of a base hit in the second and made the final play in the sixth running across the second base bag to make a play at first... Team USA pitchers struck out six of the final eight batters.

    UPCOMING SCHEDULE
    The team continues its first week in New England, traveling to Keene, NH (Thursday), Montpelier, VT (Friday), Torrington, CT (Saturday) and Newport, RI (Sunday). They return home to North Carolina on Tuesday, before taking on Chinese Taipei on June 29 in Burlinton, NC.
