National Team takes finale from Chinese Taipei, 5-1

  • KANNAPOLIS, NCó Danny Espinosa (Long Beach State) drove in two runs with his first two hits of the summer, as Team USA (9-2) took four of five from Chinese Taipei (2-4), winning the finale 5-1 on Tuesday evening. Petey Paramore (Arizona State) added three walks, while Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt) had two hits.

    Mike Minor (3-0, Vanderbilt) went the first six innings, giving up just one run on five hits for the win. He struck out four and walked one on 71 pitches. Minor used just 59 pitches over the first five innings. Steve Strasberg (San Diego State) got the save, pitching the final three scoreless innings. Strasberg retired six straight prior to a two-out double.

    Logan Forsythe's (Arkansas) first home run of the summer gave Team USA a 1-0 lead in the first. Espinosa's first hit of the summer, an RBI single to center, made it 2-0. An RBI single by Jeremy Hamilton (Wright State) then made it 3-0, plating Espinosa.

    Espinosa's bases loaded single in the third then made it 5-0, following a bases loaded walk. Kai-Wen Cheng (0-1) did not make it out of the inning, giving up five earned on six hits.

    TEAM NOTES
    Upwards of 300 Japanese media have requested credentials for the upcoming series in North Carolina... games at the Durham Bulls Ballpark will be webcast on the usabaseball.com website... Brett Wallace made his first start at first, while Justin Smoak started for the second time at designated hitter... Smoak has five multi-RBI games in 11 games... this will be the first of two games at the minor league affiliate of the White Sox. They also play Japan on July 5.

    The 10-game North Carolina home stand continues with Japan on July 4, beginning a five-game series in Durham, NC (July 4, 6, 7, 8) and Kannapolis (July 5).
