Team USA defeats China, 10-0

  • MOBILE, ALó Lefthander Mike Minor (5-0, Vanderbilt) struck out 12 over six innings as Team USA (16-6) cruised by visiting China 10-0 in seven innings on Sunday evening. Roger Kieschnick (Texas Tech) and Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt) both homered as it was first game for America since winning a silver medal at the Pan American Games on Friday.

    The first seven outs recorded by Minor were by strikeout, as he scattered two hits over the first three innings and just four over six innings and 84 pitches. He did not walk a batter.

    Josh Romanski (San Diego) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kieschnick also added a triple as part of the 11-hit attack.

    Alvarez's two-run home run in the first put the Americans on the board as an RBI single to right by Romanski then made it 3-0 in the second.

    The rout was on in the third as an RBI single by Jeremy Hamilton (Wright State) was followed by a three-run home run by Kieschnick to make it 7-0 in the third inning. A two-run double by Tommy Medica in the fourth made it 9-0.

    TEAM NOTES
    Alvarez's home run in the first was the first home run for the team since July 8 and Alvarez's first since July 4... it was the team's fourth multi-homer game of the season... Team China is managed by former Dodgers All-Star Jim Lefebvre and are assisted by former Red Sox pitcher Bruce Hurst... the game was completed after seven innings due to international rules and an opponent leading by 10 or more runs after seven innings.

    UPCOMING SCHEDULE
    The Americans play China again on July 24 in Mobile, AL... China and Team USA visit the USS Alabama tomorrow... Team USA will then head North to Birmingham, Rome, GA and Ft. Mill, SC before finishing off the nine-game American trip with the Netherlands and Russia in North Carolina... the team closes out their schedule at the World Port Tournament in the Netherlands starting on August 2.
