Team USA completes U.S. tour with win over Russia

CARY, NCó Team USA (21-8) closed out their final American road trip, taking advantage of three Russian errors and eight walks to defeat Russia 6-0 on Monday evening.
Scott Gorgen (1-0, UC Irvine) pitched into the fifth inning, retiring nine in a row, until giving up back-to-back base hits with two outs. Gorgen gave up no runs on three hits in a pre-determined start, striking out eight and walking one. He struck out the side in the third in the win.
Seth Frankoff (UNC-Wilmington) then went the next three and one-third innings, striking out five, in his first official appearance of the summer. Youth National Team invitees, Mat Batts (Plafftown, NC) and Richie Shaffer (Charlotte, NC) closed out the ninth.
Russian starter Vladamir Petrov walked five batters over an inning and two-thirds to take the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on one hit, as the leftie could not get out of the second after surrendering a 3-0 lead to Team USA.
Viacheslav Vasiliev shut down the Americans from the second on, allowing three unearned runs on three hits the rest of the way.
The team's second sacrifice fly of the night, in the seventh, gave the Americans a 4-0 lead. A dropped popup in leftfield by shortstop Artemiy Artamonov in the eighth led to two more unearned runs and a 6-0 lead. All but one American run was unearned.
Team USA ended their final American road trip at 6-2, playing eight times (with one rain out after four innings) over nine days... Scott Gorgen, recently called up from UC Irvine, made his first appearance in a Team USA jersey... Seth Frankoff (UNC-Wilmington) pitched for the second time for the Americans, after his previous start (against China on Friday night) was rained out after four innings... ... this year is the 20th Anniversary Russian Baseball with, according to its website, started absolute scratch in the spring of 1987. Since 1992 eleven players from the former Soviet Union have signed Minor League baseball contracts to play in the United States.... they are on the tail end of a 19-game American tour... Both Russian pitchers were said to be looked at by MLB scouts... Team USA rested leadoff hitter Jordan Danks and 3B Pedro Alvarez.
The team closes out the summer schedule at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands starting on August 2 against Japan... the team will play eight games (two each) against Chinese Taipei, Japan, the Netherlands and Cuba prior to a one-game championship game featuring the two teams with the best records.... the quartet of teams in the tournament are different than the ones played previously.
