Babe Ruth gets final inning-win, AABC-Dixie battle 14-innings; Legion blanks PONY; NABF nips RBI
CARY, North Carolina - Tyler Rahmatulla (INF; Mission Viejo, CA) lined a tie-breaking single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Babe Ruth to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Dixie on Wednesday in the second day of action of the 15th Annual USA Baseball Tournament of Stars at Thomas Brooks Park at the new USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The eight-team tournament, which is showcasing 144 of the nation's elite age 18-and-under high school and college athletes, concludes on June 24 with the-medal games and consolation-round play.
In other contests June 20, three-time defending champion AABC and Dixie battled to a 3-3 tie in14 innings in a contest that was suspended in the bottom of the eight inning on June 19 because of rain. Local product Michael Knox (OF; Cary, NC) blasted a three-run home run as American Legion blanked PONY 4-0. Casey Kelly (INF; Sarasota, FL) collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead NABF past RBI 7-4 in the day's finale.
Three games are on tap for June 21. Action begins at 1 p.m. (Eastern time) with NABF (1-0) meeting American Legion (1-0). At 4 p.m., the USA Stars (1-0) takes on Dixie (0-1-1). AABC (0-0-1) then tangles with Babe Ruth (1-1) at 7 p.m. in the final game of the day.
Rahmatulla's game-winning hit followed an RBI single one batter earlier by Devin Thaut (INF; Scottsdale, AZ) that tied the contest at 3-3. The final-inning comeback ended a rally that brought Babe Ruth back from a 3-1 deficit.
Earlier in the day, AABC took a 3-0 lead into the eighth inning against Dixie but couldn't hold it. Dixie rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth before play was suspended. Then, after the game resumed, Dixie knotted the game at 3-3 on a two-out run scoring single by Payton Hart (INF; Royston, GA). Harold Martinez (INF; Miami, FL) notched three hits for AABC. The teams combined to use 11 pitchers, who recorded a collective 38 strikeouts (20 by AABC hurlers, 18 by Dixie).
Knox's three-run homer capped a four-run sixth inning in the Legion's win against PONY. The blast followed singles by Jeff Malm (INF; Las Vegas, NV) and Cutter Dykstra (INF; Thousand Oaks, CA). Dykstra's hit had plated the first run of the game after Tyler Chatwood (OF; Yucaipa, CA) slapped a one-out triple. Austin Wright (LHP; Schaumburg, IL) allowed just two hits and struck out nine in six innings while combining with three other pitchers for the shutout. David Freitas (C; Wilton, CA) registered two of PONY's four hits.
Kelly lined a two-run double to highlight a four-run fifth inning that helped NABF rebound from a 3-1 deficit against RBI. Rodarrick Jones (OF; St. Gabriel, LA) also had three hits in NABF's 13-hit attack. Anthony Gose (OF; Bellflower, CA) and Isaac Galloway (OF; Rancho Cucamonga, CA) notched three stolen bases each for RBI. Galloway also had two hits and knocked in two runs.
