Stars blitz Dixie, Legion overtakes NABF; AABC gets ninth-inning victory against Babe Ruth

June 21, 2007

CARY, North Carolina - Joey Hainsfurther (INF; Dallas, TX) drove in the winning run with a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give AABC a 2-1 victory against Babe Ruth on June 21 to highlight the third day of action of the 15th Annual USA Baseball Tournament of Stars at Thomas Brooks Park at the new USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The eight-team tournament, which is showcasing 144 of the nation's elite age 18-and-under high school and college athletes, concludes on June 24 with the-medal games and consolation-round play.

In other contests June 21, the USA Stars exploded for eight runs in the second inning on the way to a 13-5 win against NABF. In the other contest, Jeff May (C; Stem, NC) cracked a bases-loaded double to highlight a 13-hit attack as the American Legion clipped Dixie 13-5.

Three contests are scheduled June 22 to complete round-robin pool play. Action begins at 1 p.m. (Eastern time) with the USA Stars (2-0) taking on AABC (1-0-1). At 4 p.m., RBI (1-1) meets American Legion (2-0). NABF (1-1) clashes with PONY (0-2) at 7 p.m. in the final game of pool play.

Hainsfurther's game-winning hit scored Kyle Skipworth (C; Riverside, CA) from second base to give three-time defending champion AABC its first win of the tourney. Skipworth, who tallied both of AABC's runs, led off the ninth inning with a single and then moved to second base on a wild pitch. Four AABC hurlers teamed up to permit just two hits while fanning 21 Babe Ruth hitters. Winning pitcher Jordan Swagerty (RHP; Sachse, TX) struck out eight in three innings of relief. Babe Ruth starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein (LHP; Flagstaff, AZ) whiffed 12 in six innings. Rocco Gondek (C; South Glastonbury, CT) plated Babe Ruth's lone run with a sixth-inning double.

May, from nearby South Granville High School, laced his three-run double during a four-run seventh inning that stretched the Legion's lead to 8-3. After falling behind 3-0, the Legion scored 11 unanswered runs to move its record to 2-0. Jeff Malm (INF, Las Vegas, NV) had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Legion while teammates Michael Knox (OF; Cary, NC) and Ryan Gorton (OF; Tigard, OR) each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Preston Tucker (INF; Tampa, FL) notched three of NABF's 10 hits while driving in a run.

The Stars sent 13 batters to the plate in its big inning, taking advantage of four walks issued by Dixie pitchers while amassing five hits. Rolando Gomez (INF; Pembroke Pines, FL) had the key blow of the frame with a bases-loaded triple. Garrison Lassiter (INF; High Point, NC) also added a two-run single in the outburst. Five Stars pitchers combined to strike out 15 while allowing just four hits. Pablo Bermudez (OF; Miami Shores, FL) collected two of those hits and scored two runs for Dixie.
