AABC lone unbeaten team remaining at USA Baseball Tournament of Stars

AABC clips USA Stars; RBI sinks Legion; NABF pitchers combine on a one-hitter
CARY, North Carolina - Jordan Swagerty (C; Sachse, TX) belted a leadoff homer, igniting a five-run sixth inning, to propel AABC to a 7-3 victory against the USA Stars in a battle of unbeaten teams June 22 in the final day of pool play in the 15th Annual USA Baseball Tournament of Stars at Thomas Brooks Park at the new USA Baseball National Training Complex.
AABC trailed the Stars by a run entering the bottom half of the sixth inning. But Swagerty, who drove in two runs on a pair of hits, lofted a towering homer to right field to tie the game at 3-3. AABC then loaded the bases on three straight walks before tallying the tie-breaking run on a passed ball. Joey Hainsfurther (INF; Dallas, TX), who had three hits, and Ben Grisz (OF; Dallas, TX) added run-scoring singles while pinchhitter Kyle Skipworth (C; Riverside, CA) plated a run with a sacrifice fly to finish the flurry. The Stars collected only four hits. Pierce Rankin (C; Lake Forest, WA) scored twice for the Stars. AABC's victory earned it the No. 1 spot in its four-team pool for semifinal action and kept AABC as the only unbeaten team left in the tourney.
In other action June 22, RBI handed the American Legion its first tournament loss, taking advantage of four Legion errors, in a 4-2 win. Meanwhile, four pitchers - Jack Armstrong (RHP; Jupiter, FL), Robbie Ross (LHP; Nicholasville, KY), Jordan Craft (RHP; Kennesaw, GA) and L.J. Hoes (OF; Bowie, MD) -combined on a one-hitter as NABF raced past PONY 6-1.
Four games are on tap for semifinal play June 23. Action begins with PONY (0-3) taking on Babe Ruth (1-2) at 10 a.m. Then, at 1 p.m., Dixie (0-2-1) faces NABF (2-1). RBI (2-1) meets AABC (2-0-1) at 4 p.m. The final game at 7 p.m. features the USA Stars (2-1) against the Legion (2-1).
The eight-team tournament, which is showcasing 144 of the nation's elite age 18-and-under high school and college athletes, concludes on June 24 with the-medal games and consolation-round play.
RBI jumped to a 2-0 lead in its first at bat then held off the Legion for its victory. Isaac Galloway (OF; Rancho Cucamonga, CA) and Ricky Oropesa (OF; Rancho Cucamonga, CA) each garnered two hits and scored a run for RBI. After the Legion scored a run in the ninth inning to close within 4-2, RBI relief pitcher Anthony Gose (OF-LHP; Bellflower, CA) came on the get the final three outs and earn his second save of the tournament. Ryan Gorton (UT; Tigard, OR) had three of the Legion's six hits while driving in a run. Despite the loss, the Legion captured the top spot in its pool based on tournament tie-breaking criteria.
The quartet of NABF hurlers tossed eight innings of no-hit ball before PONY's Bentley Heyman (INF; Atlanta, GA) led off the ninth inning with a sharp single to left field. Heyman would then score his team's only run on a two-out sacrifice fly by David Freitas (C; Wilton, CA). Hoes, who pitched the final inning for NABF, notched two RBI and scored a run. Austin Stadler (OF; Midlothian, VA) registered two hits, including a two-run single in the sixth, for the winners.
