KARSTENS, USA DOWN KOREA; HEAD TO THE SEMI-FINALS: Team USA and Korea locked horns in their quarter-final elimination game on Friday night at Shinchuan Stadium in Taipei City. USA starter Jeff Karstens (1-0) got the start, his first since beating Mexico 3-0 in the World Cup opener.

USA jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Jayson Nix singled and Andy LaRoche crushed a 3-2 pitch into the left field seats for his third homerun of the tournament. In the third, USA tacked on another run when Nix ripped a double down the left field line. After a walk to LaRoche, Steven Pearce singled to left scoring Nix to give USA a 3-0 lead.

In thes sixth, Korea recoreded back-to-back hits from Joo Chan Kim and Seung Hwa Lee which lead to a run and cut Korea's deficit to 3-1.

But Jeff Karstens was great. The right-hander went seven innings, scattering five hits, giving up one run and striking out seven withouth walking a single batter. He threw 82 pitches, pounding the strike zone with 66 strikes and 16 balls. Karstens then gave way to the reliable Lee Gronkiewicz who pitched a perfect eithth. In the ninth, Jeff Stevens closed the game. A key play in that inning - with one out and a runner on first, Korea's Ji Wan Na ripped a line drive that was stabbed by a diving Steve Pearce who stepped on first in time for the double play. Team USA bench jumped out of the dugout to greet their teammates, celebrating their trip to the semi-finals tomorrow against the Netherlands.

CHANGE OF SCENERY: Team USA traveled from Taichung to Taipei City for the elimination rounds. Taipei City is a bigger metropolitan city with a population of three million people. All games in the elimination rounds will be played at Shinchuan and Tien-Mou Stadiums.

SEMI'S SET: In tomorrow's semi-finals, USA will meet the Netherlands at 6:00 PM at Tien Mou Stadium while Cuba will face off against Japan at Shinchuan Stadium, also at 6:00PM.

NOTES: Second baseman Jayson Nix went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a sacrafice bunt; Andy LaRoche was 1-for-3 with a HR, two RBI and a walk.
