Canada Rises to Top After Second Day of Games

September 2, 2007

CARY, NC- The second day of competition at the Women’s Baseball International Friendship Series began with a rematch of last night’s USA-Japan game. The Americans were out for revenge after the lop-sided 13-1 Japanese victory, scoring early and often on Japanese starter Mayako Abe. Three of the first four American batters doubled and all of them scored to chase Abe and set the tone for the rest of the game. The U.S. Women’s Trials Team tacked on two more runs in the second, and aside from a couple errors that allowed two Japanese runs, the Americans controlled the game to earn their first victory of the International Friendship Series.

Game two featured visiting Japan and home Canada with the latter also looking to avenge a Saturday loss to the Japanese. The game started off as a tight contest with Japan leading 1-0 heading into the third inning. After the Canadians retired the Japanese in order, the home team bats came alive to score six runs on seven hits. Japan could not recover from the devastating inning, mustering only five hits in the game and ultimately dropping the contest 7-2. After finishing the first day 2-0, Japan now falls to 2-2 and will play rubber matches with both Canada and the United States on Monday.

The U.S. Women’s Trial Team occupied the visitor’s dugout for the first time in Sunday’s night cap against Canada. The game proved to be a pitcher’s duel as neither team scored until the fifth inning. Americans Lindsay Horwitz and Jane Uh both singled and scored in the frame to give Team USA the 2-0 lead. However, the Canadians struck back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on a game-tying two-RBI single by designated hitter Joseé-Marie Tremblay. After gunning down Laura Brenneman at the plate to preserve the tie in the top of the seventh, the Canadians finished off their opponents with a walk-off single by Ashley Stephenson for the 3-2 victory.
