Canada Finishes in First Place after Competitive Weekend

September 3, 2007

CARY, NC- The final day of the USA Baseball Women’s International Friendship Series opened with the host Americans taking on their neighbors to the north, Team Canada. The Canadians struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third on base hits by Karine Gagne and Amanda Asay. After getting one run back in the top of the sixth, the U.S. Women’s Trials Team had one final shot at the Canadians. The Americans took advantage of two walks, a hit batter, and singles by Anna Kimbrel and Jane Uh to plate 5 runs in the top half of the final frame and earn the 6-2 victory.

The U.S. Women’s Trials Team looked to finish the weekend on a high note in an afternoon game against Team Japan. The game proved to be a tight battle as the two teams combines for only three runs. Once again the U.S. team found themselves trailing early as Japan scored in the second inning on a double by right fielder Kei Matsumoto. But the Japanese pitching could not find an answer for Americans Jane Uh and Kim Voissard as the shortstop and center fielder each collected three hits and scored both of the U.S. Team’s runs. After the 2-1 victory, the U.S. Women’s Trials Team finished the weekend with a 3-3 record.

The ninth and final game of the Women’s International Friendship Series pitted visitor Canada against home Japan. The Japanese played a hard fought game, but the day belonged to Canada as they scored in four of the seven innings to finish with the best record (4-2) in the event. Both Karine Gagne and Stephanie Savoie finished with two hits as Gagne scored two runs and Savoie collected two RBIs. After the 6-2 loss, Japan fell to 2-4 and finished in third place on the weekend.
