Three-run second leads Blue team to 10-3 win over Red team

  • CARY, N.C. Shortstop Zach Vincej's (Saugus, Calif.) two-run double capped a three-run second inning for the Blue Team as they defeated the Red Team, 10-3, in game two of the Youth National Team Trials on Tuesday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

    After rightfielder Andrew Aplin (Suisan, Calif.) reached on a two-out two-base error in the bottom of the second, centerfielder Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C.) lined an RBI-single to center to drive in the game's first run. Miller advanced all the way to third when his line-drive single was misplayed and leftfielder James Ramsay (Brandon, Fla.) drew a walk to give the Blue Team runners on the corners. Vincej followed with a two-run double to right, scoring Miller and Ramsay to give the Blue Team a 3-0 lead.

    The Red Team scored twice in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Rightfielder Robert Refsnyder (Laguna Hills, Calif.) drew a one-out walk and leftfielder Brian Ragira (Arlington, Texas) was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Refsnyder and Ragira would then pull off a double steal before being knocked in on a two-run single by second baseman Nick Franklin (Longwood, Fla.).

    Following back-to-back singles by Ramsay and Vincej to start the bottom of the fifth, second baseman Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout to first. First baseman Richie Shaffer (Charlotte, N.C.) then laced a two-run double to the gap in left center, driving in Ramsay and Vincej to give the Blue Team a 5-2 advantage.

    The Blue Team added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-2. Miller and pitcher Alex Muren (Ramona, Calif.) reached on consecutive two-out singles to get the inning going. Second baseman Justin Charles (Galt, Calif.) then delivered an RBI-double to left, scoring Miller and moving Muren to third. Muren would later score on a bases-loaded balk to end the inning.

    In the top of the eighth, Ragira belted a two-out solo shot over the left field wall to make it a 7-3 ballgame.

    After Aplin slapped a leadoff single through the right side to begin the bottom of the eighth, Miller moved him into scoring position with a groundout to short. Muren would then fly out to center to move Aplin to third and Charles drove him in with an RBI-single to right to give the Blue Team an 8-3 lead.

    Shaffer would double and later score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth and third baseman Jo Jo Maldonado (River Forest, Ill.) added an RBI-groundout to score pitcher Jacob Tillotson (Lake City, Fla.) to cap the scoring at 10-3.

    Muren picked up the win for the Blue Team after holding the Red Team to one run on two hits in two and two-thirds innings of relief with two strikeouts. Starter Colton Cain (Waxahachie, Texas) tossed two scoreless frames with five strikeouts in the win, Chris Knott (Brandon, Fla.) had one strikeout in one inning and Tillotson held the Red Team to one run on two hits in three innings of work with three strikeouts.

    Red Team starter Zach Lee fanned four batters in his first appearance but suffered the loss after giving up three unearned runs on two hits in three innings pitched. Cody Stiles (Coral Springs, Fla.), Tyler Spurlin (The Woodlands, Texas) and Eric Buckland (Middleton, Del.) each worked two innings of relief for the Red Team in the loss.

    Shaffer led the Blue Team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored, while Vincej went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored and Charles finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Miller went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Aplin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Ramsay finished 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored. Muren had a hit and a run scored, Maldonado finished with a hit and an RBI and Cain and catcher Max Stassi (Yuba City, Calif.) added hits in the win.

    Ragira went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored to pace the Red Team's offense. Franklin finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, third baseman Matt Davidson (Yucaipa, Calif.) went 2-for-4, Refsnyder was 1-for-3 with a run scored and centerfielder Randal Grichuk (Rosenberg, Texas) finished 1-for-2.

    Game three of the Youth National Team Trials will be Thursday at 6:35 p.m., while game four will be Friday at 6:05 p.m.

    The Youth National Team Trials currently has 36 players competing for 18 roster spots to be announced on Friday, August 10. Following the announcement of the squad, Team USA will remain in Cary for four days of training before departing for Barquisimeto, Venezuela to compete in the IBAF World Youth Championships August 17-26.
