Team USA opens 37th Baseball World Cup with back-to-back shutouts
Highlighted by young stars such as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ Evan Longoria and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Andy LaRoche, the 2007 USA Baseball World Cup Team kicked off World Cup play in Taichung, Taiwan on a high-note, logging consecutive shutouts against two intercontinental rivals -– Mexico, 3-0, and Panama, 7-0. This fast start comes on the heels of a 4-2 tune-up tour through the Arizona Fall League. Summer 2007 in review
While the summer months are always a busy time for USA Baseball and its National Teams, the 2007 version stood out more so than most years. With all six teams either competing or gearing up for competition (the World Cup and 14U National squads are taking the field this fall), the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, and the Youth National Team bringing home the gold in the World Youth Championship, it certainly was a summer to remember. • The UNC-Chapel Hill baseball team will play its home schedule at the newly opened USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC while Boshamer Stadium is renovated.
• To coincide with the start of the 37th Baseball World Cup, the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) announced a new direction for the organization, highlighted by the launch of a new Web site.
• Women’s National Teamer Donna Mills had her batting gloves added to the “Diamond Dreams” women’s exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer.
