  • GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA - The USA Baseball 14 U National Team won its third game in a row at the Pan-Am 'A' Regional Qualifier, defeating Honduras 18-1 in only three innings.

The early morning start left Galvez Sobral Stadium a little less lively than usual, but there were still plenty of fans in attendance to cheer on the U.S. as they soared in the bright Guatemalan sun. The Americans scored early and often, posting fourteen runs in a 40-minute top half of the first inning. Shortstop Zach Davies (Gilbert, Ariz.) started it off with a double as the next fourteen batters all reached base and scored. Starting pitcher Cole Gleason (Mesa, Ariz.) and outfielder Joe Armstrong (Union City, Calif.) both contributed singles, and first baseman Tony DiMartino (Alamo, Calif.), third baseman Casey Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) and second baseman Joe Ross (Oakland, Calif.) all earned walks. Armstrong then capped off the inning with a bases-loaded bomb to deep center field.

On the defensive side of the ball, Gleason struggled early with his control on the mound, but settled down to retire five of the last seven batters he faced on strikeouts. In all, six of the nine outs Team USA recorded were punch outs.

Shortstop Kai Davis (Lindon, Utah) had an excellent day at the plate, going two-for-three with a homerun, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

"Kai really kept a positive and enthusiastic attitude throughout the whole game," said coach Dave Webb (Gilbert, Ariz.) "We game him the opportunity in the spotlight, and he certainly shined."

Third baseman Mitchell Kranson (Danville, Calif.) had two excellent at-bats in the second and third innings, roping two line drives that were caught by the pitcher and third baseman respectively.

On the mound for Team USA, Matt Taylor (Corona, Calif.) finished the game by forcing a 1-6-3 double play and striking out the final batter.

Team USA will play its final round-robin game on Wednesday when they face off against El Salvador at 9:00 a.m. at Galvez Sobral stadium.
