  • ATLANTA, Ga. - After a day of practices on Thursday, the intra-squad games portion of the 2006 Junior National Team Trials began today at Georgia Tech's picturesque Russ Chandler Stadium. The first game in a scheduled three-game Blue vs. Red intra-squad series went to the Blue Team by a score of 5-3 in a scheduled 10-inning game.

The Blue Team got off to a fast start with single runs in three of the first four innings. In the top of the first, the team used small-ball to post their first run. Leadoff hitter Rafael Thomas (Lufkin, TX) reached base after being hit by a pitch in the foot. Pinch runner Greg Peavey (Vancouver, WA) then advanced to third on a passed ball and groundout, before scoring on a single to center by Matt Dominguez (Lake Balboa, CA). In the third inning, Justin Jackson (Asheville, NC) reached on a single to right, and after being sacrificed to second base scored on a throwing error on a fielder's choice by Dominguez. In the fourth, Sequoyah Stonecipher (San Diego, CA) blasted a solo homerun to left to push the Blue Team's lead to 3-0.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Red Team was able to plate two runs to pull within one. After reaching base on a one-out walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Garrett Nash (Draper, UT) scored an rbi-double to left centerfield by third baseman Hunter Morris (Huntsville, AL). One out later, Morris scored on a single to left by designated hitter Josh Vitters (Anaheim, CA).

The Blue Team would pull away for good though with two runs in the top of the tenth inning, both coming with two outs. Second baseman Victor Sanchez (Norwalk, CA) reached base with one out on a hit-by-pitch, then stole second, and was advanced to third on a Dominguez groundout. With two outs, Danny Rams (Miami, FL) looped a double down the leftfield line to plate Sanchez. Leftfielder Freddie Freeman (Villa Park, CA) then followed with a double of his own to score Rams. The Red Team was able to muster a run in the bottom half of the tenth inning when Tommy Medica (San Jose, CA), who had singled and stolen second base, scored on a single by centerfielder Matt Newman (Glendale, AZ).

The 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the third as Team USA grabbed the lead after Skip Schumaker ripped a two-run triple, scoring Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kurt Suzuki, who reached on a hit-by-pitch and single, respectively. Bobby Hill pushed the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single, plating Schumaker. As Hill reached first, Venezuela pitcher Felix Arellan began yelling at Hill and Team USA first base coach Reggie Smith as he accused Hill of stealing signs. A short argument ensued before both sides were separated and play was resumed.

For the Red Team, John Gast (Longwood, FL) started and pitched a scheduled three innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three. Robert Broach (Luling, LA) followed with three innings of his own, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while fanning five. Georgia-native, Josh Smoker (Calhoun, GA) followed with two scoreless innings, giving up only two walks, while striking out four. Mike Moustakas (Northridge, CA) finished the game for the Red Team, tossing two innings, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out two batters.

The Junior National Team Trials games will continue Saturday, September 9th, with a scheduled 10-inning game at the University of Georgia's Foley Field in Athens, Georgia.
