ATHENS, Ga. - The 2006 Junior National Team Trials continued today with the Red Team defeating the Blue Team 6-2 at the University of Georgia's beautiful Foley Field. Red Team pitchers combined to limit the Blue squad to only five hits and no walks in the scheduled eight-inning contest.Red Team starter Matt Harvey (Mystic, CT) fired four innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out eight Blue Team hitters. Tim Alderson (Phoenix, AZ) followed Harvey with four innings of scoreless, two-hit ball, striking out two. Alderson earned the win as the Red Team took the lead in the fifth inning. Iden Nazario (Miami, FL) took the loss for the Blue Team, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits, three hit batsman, and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Blue Team starter Greg Peavey (Vancouver, WA) tossed four innings, allowing a run on four hits and four walks while striking out four. Blue Team relievers Kevin Rhoderick (Scottsdale, AZ) and Michael Main (Deland, FL) threw well, firing two and one scoreless innings, respectively.
The Blue Team took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a timely two-out, two-run double by second baseman Victor Sanchez (Norwalk, CA). The Red Team got on the board in the second inning on a lead-off, opposite-field homer by first baseman Mike Moustakas (Northridge, CA). Then in the top of the fifth, the Red Team took the lead for good with a five-run outburst. All four base runners that reached base via either a walk or hit-by-pitch scored for the Red Team. Centerfielder Matt Newman (Glendale, AZ) had an RBI-single in the inning and catcher Tommy Medica (San Jose, CA) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The final game in the three-game Red vs. Blue series will be played Sunday at 6pm at Foley Field on the campus of the University of Georgia.
