  • ATHENS, Ga. - The 2006 Junior National Team Trials continued today with the Blue Team defeating the Red Team 4-3 in a scheduled seven-inning contest at Foley Field on the campus of the University of Georgia.

    Blue Team second baseman Victor Sanchez (Norwalk, CA) blooped a walk-off, rbi single into centerfield, scoring Rafael Thomas (Lufkin, TX) to complete a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Danny Rams (Miami, FL) scored the first run of the comeback on a wild pitch by Red Team pitcher Matt Newman (Glendale, AZ). Newman took the loss, tossing two and a third innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning one.

    Red Team starting pitcher Tanner Robles (Murray, UT) fired four innings giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks while striking out four. Blue Team starting pitcher Blake Beavan (Irving, TX) left the game after five innings with the game tied to get a no-decision. He gave up two runs on four hits and no walks while punching out four. Mike Watt (San Juan Capistrano, CA) picked up the win for the Blue Team, tossing two innings giving up one run on two hits and no walks while striking out two.

    The Blue Team took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning after leadoff hitter Thomas was hit by a pitch and two-hole hitter Sanchez reached on a walk. Third-hole hitter Justin Jackson (Asheville, NC) drove in Thomas with a single to right, and an error by the Red Team allowed Sanchez to score on the same play.

    The Red Team tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when right fielder Hunter Morris (Huntsville, AL) led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Catcher Mike Moustakas (Northridge, CA) immediately followed with a solo homerun to right center field to tie the game at two runs apiece.

    The Red Team took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Moustakas singled and stole second base. Newman drove him in with a single to left center before his team lost the game in the bottom half of the inning.

    The Junior National Team Trials players will begin a three-game series versus Chinese Taipei on Monday night at 6pm at Shiloh High School in Snellville, GA.
