  • SNELLVILLE, Ga. The 2006 Junior National Team Trials continued today with 26 of the 32 players representing the USA in a 2-1 victory over the Chinese Taipei Junior Team at Parents Field on the campus of Shiloh High School.

Five American pitchers combined to limit the Taiwanese squad to six hits and one unearned run in the victory. American starter John Gast (Longwood, FL) picked up the win as he completed his scheduled two innings with a 1-0 lead that the Americans did not relinquish. He gave up only two hits and struck out two. Michael Main (Deland, FL) earned the save, preserving the 2-1 lead by firing 1.2 perfect innings while striking out four batters.

Team USA took an early one run lead in the bottom half of the first inning when centerfielder Matt Newman (Glendale, AZ) hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a long fly ball to right field by Mike Moustakas (Northridge, CA), and then scored on a passed ball by the Taiwanese catcher. The Americans got their second run in the sixth inning when Freddie Freeman (Villa Park, CA) scored on an rbi single to the second baseman by Main. The Americans threatened in other innings, only to ground into three inning-ending double plays.

The three-game series versus Chinese Taipei continues on Tuesday night at 6pm at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, GA.
