USA BASEBALL NATIONAL TEAM SHUTS OUT CZECH REPUBLIC 16-0
National Team sweeps doubleheader by a combined score of 31-0.

HAVANA, Cuba ¬¬--- The USA Baseball National Team continued its pitching dominance at the FISU World University Championships with a third straight shutout in a 11-0 win over the Czech Republic Wednesday afternoon at Latino Stadium.
The National Team swept a day-night doubleheader to improve to 23-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the FISU tournament, while the Czech Republic fell to 0-3. The USA has outscored its opponents 34-0 in the three games played.
Jake Arrieta (TCU) was outstanding in the starting effort, as he dominated in his five innings of work to improve to 4-0 on the summer. He gave up the lone Czech hit of the game in the fifth inning and struck out nine batters with three walks in the winning effort. Tim Federowicz (North Carolina) came on in the sixth and pitched two innings of hitless relief to close out the shutout.
UCLA’s Brandon Crawford had his best game of the summer finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored in the start at shortstop.
The US took a 3-0 lead in the third, with two of the runs coming via a double by Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt). Roger Kieschnick (Texas Tech) led off the inning with an infield bunt single and stole second base. Brandon Crawford followed with an infield single of his own and also stole second. Kieschnick scored on a wild pitch and after a walk to Julio Borbon (Tennessee), Alvarez roped a line shot over the centerfielder’s head and to the wall to score both runners.
They added four more runs in the fourth to push the advantage to 7-0. Sean Doolittle (Virginia) was hit by a pitch and walks to Darwin Barney (Oregon State) and Preston Clark (Texas) loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Crawford came through with a two-run single and advanced to second on a throwing error from the outfield. Borbon lined a RBI single to center and Jemile Weeks (Miami) came through with a sacrifice fly RBI to close out the scoring.
The USA added four more runs in the sixth inning with the big blows coming via a RBI single by Julio Borbon and a two-run double by J.P. Arencibia (Tennessee).
Crawford added a two-run double and Alvarez and Arencibia added RBI singles to key a five-run seventh to make it 16-0.
Borbon had three hits and three RBI and Alvarez and Arencibia had two hits and three RBI each to help lead the 12 hit attack. Arencibia finished the doubleheader with five hits and eight RBI.
The US will play Mexico tomorrow night at 8:45 p.m. at Latino Stadium. Mexico is 2-1 in the tourney after beating the Czechs 7-5 Wednesday morning.
